JO! – Episode 1

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The moonlight view through the window panes was a beauty to behold! I was on stage about to perform at the Mariah Centenary theatre in North America. Cinderella was our story ballet for the night, and the music had begun. I made plier then etendre, relever and sauter. As I was about to glisser, my eyes met with the dark-blue eyes of an African-American prince amidst the audience. Arched eyebrows, perfectly contoured face, closed mouth and a twitch of eyelids which made him bat his eyelashes. Picture that.

At that magical moment, I almost missed my lines as his eyes swayed left and right with his intent gaze on me. As I made an angle, our eyes met again with a new glamour and charm, I froze in position, until the applause brought me back. Ballet is over.

I couldn’t hold my breath as I took slow steps in between the lawns, reminiscing on what happened moments ago. Just then, he appeared at the end of the lawn, tugged me into the belvedere nearby and made me sit. What do they say? When reality comes, nearer. Another weird gaze lasted for a few moments before I broke the silence. “Good evening” I mouthed.

“Whatcha good ‘bout the evening?” He asked. Cold as stone I was, my stare meeting his gaze, I haven’t met an Afro so cute! “I’m Jonathan” he finally said with his masculine, deep, firm and crack voice.
“Im Jolly” I said in a whisper. “North American”. “Italian”. “I’m Italian” I said in emphasis.

He held most of the converse while I nodded, sighed, smiled or blushed in interjections. He talked about his family, livelihood, background and every damn thing.

At the hotel, he gave me a deep kiss on the forehead and bid me farewell. He had to drop me off as I had missed our convey.
His voice shook me out of transfix, “I will ring you, G’night”.
“G’night” I said in response.

I went straight to the ballerinadom to grab a cup of coffee as my mind swayed back and forth with images of Jo! in my subconscious. Totally lost in thought until a fellow ballerina warned me, “Your coffee will get cold, Jolly.”
